How it works

Cloth Width

Span both boards, spine gap, turn-in on all sides, plus 0.25 inch margin each side for alignment adjustment.

Width = (2 × Board width) + Spine + (2 × Turn-in) + 0.5 in

Cloth Height

Cover board height plus top and bottom turn-in with small alignment margin.

Height = Board height + (2 × Turn-in) + 0.5 in

Cloth Yardage for Multiple Books

Book cloth typically sold in rolls 35–50 inches wide. Calculate if pieces fit width-wise across roll or need linear yardage.

Example Scenarios

Boards 6.25×9.25, spine 0.6 in, 0.875 turn-in: cloth piece ≈ 15.5 × 11 inches from 17-inch wide roll.

11-inch tall pieces × 20 = 220 inches = 6.1 linear yards from 24-inch wide book cloth roll.

Cloth piece covers spine and turn-in only: width = spine + 2× turn-in + 0.5 in; height = board height + 2× turn-in.

FAQ

Standard turn-in is 0.75–1 inch (20–25mm). Larger turn-in is easier for beginners but uses more cloth. Minimum 0.625 inch for secure adhesion.

Cloth piece width must fit your book's total wrap dimension. Standard rolls are 17, 24, or 35 inches wide. Calculate piece size before purchasing.

Most commercial book cloth is preshrunk. Test a sample with PVA glue — if significant shrinkage occurs when wet, preshrink by dampening and pressing dry.

Book cloth has paper backing for adhesive bonding. Regular fabric needs backing (HeatnBond, paper lamination) to prevent glue bleed-through and stretching.

Nest multiple small book pieces on one cloth cut. For editions, calculate total yardage and buy continuous roll length rather than individual cuts.
