How it works

Text Block Thickness

Sheets = pages ÷ 2 (each sheet has two pages). Multiply sheet count by caliper (inches per sheet) for text block thickness.

Text thickness = (Pages ÷ 2) × Paper caliper

Hardcover Spine

Add board thickness for front and back covers plus liner material (mull, paper liner) on each side of text block.

Spine = Text thickness + (2 × Board thickness) + (2 × Liner thickness)

Perfect Bound Spine

Paperback/perfect binding uses text thickness plus small glue buildup allowance at spine edge.

Spine = (Pages ÷ 2) × Caliper + Glue allowance (0.02–0.05 in)

Example Scenarios

100 sheets × 0.004 in caliper = 0.4 in text block. Perfect bound spine ≈ 0.42 inches.

40 sheets × 0.006 in = 0.24 in text. Plus 0.08 in boards and liners = 0.40 in total spine width.

300 sheets × 0.004 in = 1.2 in spine. Verify printer equipment handles spine width before cover design.

FAQ

Paper suppliers list caliper in inches or microns per sheet. Typical 60 lb uncoated text: 0.004 in. 80 lb coated: 0.006 in. Always use actual paper specs, not weight alone.

Yes. Perfect binding adds minimal glue. Case binding adds board and liner thickness on each side. Saddle stitch has no spine — sheets nest inside fold.

Usually incorrect caliper assumption or not accounting for board thickness in hardcover. Measure a sample signature stack with calipers for precision.

Most POD printers handle 0.25–2 inches spine width. Very thin books (under 48 pages) may not spine well. Very thick books need PUR glue, not standard EVA.

Yes. Rounding and backing create a shoulder. Add 10–15% to flat spine calculation or use professional formulas accounting for round shape.
