How it works

Signature Count

Pages per signature must be divisible by 4 (for folio folding). Common sizes: 4, 8, 12, 16, 32 pages per signature.

Signatures = Total pages ÷ Pages per signature

Page Divisibility Check

Remainder must be zero. Adjust total pages (add blanks) or change signature size to achieve even division.

Remainder = Total pages mod Pages per signature

Paper Grain Direction

Signature fold should be parallel to paper grain to prevent cracking. Grain short signatures fold more cleanly.

Fold parallel to grain for best results

Example Scenarios

192 ÷ 16 = 12 signatures exactly. Each signature is one folded sheet of 4 leaves (8 pages) or two sheets depending on imposition.

150 pages doesn't divide evenly by 16. Use 10-page signatures (15 sigs) or add 2 blank pages to reach 152 (19 × 8-page signatures).

One signature of 4–40 pages sewn through center fold — simplest binding for zines and chapbooks.

FAQ

A signature (section/quire) is a group of folded sheets forming a unit sewn together. Multiple signatures are sewn consecutively to form the text block.

Hand binding: typically 4–16 pages (1–4 folded sheets). Machine binding: up to 32–64 pages. Thicker paper = fewer pages per signature.

Each folded sheet creates 4 pages (folio: 2 leaves, 4 pages). Signature page count must be a multiple of 4 for proper imposition without blank pages.

Add blank pages at front or back to reach divisible count, or adjust signature size. Never leave partial signatures — they weaken the binding.

Yes. Heavy art paper (200+ gsm) folds poorly in thick signatures. Use 4–8 page signatures for thick paper; 16–32 for thin text weight.

About Signature Calculator

Hand bookbinding sews text blocks in signatures (folded groups of pages). Enter total page count and preferred pages per signature to calculate number of signatures, leftover pages, and optimal signature size for your paper and binding style.
