How it works

Calculate gasoline expense

Divide annual miles by positive fuel economy, then multiply by the entered price per US gallon.

Gasoline expense = annual miles ÷ miles per US gallon × USD per US gallon

Calculate billed charging expense

Use electricity at the wall or charger billing point per mile, so charging losses are included once. Add extra fees not already included in the per-kWh price.

EV charging expense = annual miles × billed kWh per mile × USD per kWh + extra charging fees

Compare the energy totals

Subtract charging expense from gasoline expense. A negative difference means EV energy expense is higher under the entered assumptions; a zero gasoline baseline has no relative percentage.

Energy cost difference = gasoline expense − EV charging expense

Example Scenarios

12,000 miles, 30 MPG and $3.50 per gallon gives $1,400 gasoline expense. At 0.3 billed kWh per mile, $0.20 per kWh and $60 extra fees, EV expense is $780; the difference is $620.

Enter the actual public-charging price and extra fees. The difference can be negative without any error in the model.

Use annual miles for the defined commute and allocate fees consistently. Keep unrelated journeys and ownership costs in a separate record.

Applying an MPGe number as kWh per mile

Use a compatible measured or documented billed-electricity value; the input is not MPGe.

Compare full ownership costs and the vehicle’s practical fit separately.
