How it works

Count infill across each measured face

Orientation determines the across-span and complete cut length. The final board must have positive remaining width; a layout ending inside a fixed gap needs review. Vertical height controls cut length, not an extra board-count factor.

Usable across-span = face span − start clearance − far clearance; N = ceil((usable span + internal gap) ÷ (actual face width + internal gap))

Reconcile complete cuts with actual stock

Each physical face and each reviewed rail group receives its own whole-stock allocation. Inter-piece kerf is reserved; unallocated length includes any terminal separation loss. Offcuts are not automatically reused across groups, and no optimal cut plan or invented splice is claimed.

Pieces per stock = floor((stock length − total end trim + kerf) ÷ (complete cut length + kerf))

Keep each exact SKU in its own physical unit. Quote prices charge complete purchased packs. Missing prices keep the full total unknown; unentered materials, installation work and fees are not estimated.

Example Scenarios

At an illustrative actual 5.5 in board face, zero internal gap and zero edge clearances, the count is 175 installed board pieces. Changing height alone changes cut length and stock fit, not this across-width count. These are not recommended product or gap specifications.

Two 6 ft cuts cannot fit a 12 ft stock board when positive inter-piece kerf must be reserved. Enter actual trim, saw loss and stock length rather than dividing total linear length alone.

Use the separate whole-item schedule for exact reviewed panels, gate assemblies, post SKUs, fasteners or source boards. The tool reconciles stock and packages without inventing a board-on-board multiplier, rail rule or concrete quantity.

Confusing installed pieces with source boards or whole packages

Inspect the complete cut fit and per-group source allocation, then apply matching stock and actual package size separately.

Using one style multiplier or height rule for every fence

Use exact product geometry for supported straight infill or a separately reviewed takeoff. Rails, overlaps, profiles, posts and foundations need their own evidence.

FAQ

Vertical board positions are counted across the face width. Height determines each complete board cut and whether it fits the actual stock. For horizontal infill, the counting and cutting directions are reversed.

Internal gaps apply between boards; edge clearances are separate. The last board uses the remaining positive face width. If the chosen fixed-gap layout ends inside a gap, the record is rejected for layout review rather than creating a zero-width or negative board.

No. Rail bays, rails per bay and complete cut lengths come from an independently reviewed schedule. Other materials require explicit whole-item lines. A geometric infill count does not determine foundations, supports, fasteners or structural adequacy.

No. Each physical face and each rail group receives a separate stock allocation. That conservative grouping is traceable but not globally optimal. Use a reviewed whole-item cutting takeoff when a responsible plan establishes different reuse or mixed-length yields.

Geometry’s additional-item draft is separate from the whole-schedule draft. Only active fields are validated and exported. Source, product or input-unit changes clear dependent quantities, dimensions or prices; display-unit conversion preserves the original entries.
