Divide the weighed salt by the weighed water. For 50 g salt and 1,000 g water, the ratio is 5%.
Salt-to-water % = salt ÷ water × 100Salt as a fraction of salt plus water
Include salt in the denominator. The same 50 g salt and 1,000 g water make 1,050 g total, so the salt mass fraction is about 4.761905%.

Treating every “5% brine” as the same ratio
Keep the denominator with the percentage. With 1,000 g water, 5% relative to water requires 50 g salt; 5% of salt + water requires about 52.631579 g.
Reading combined mass as solution volume
The total is salt mass plus water mass in grams. Dissolving salt does not make that sum a volume in liters; this calculator does not model density.
