Workflow

  1. Preserve and inventory the source

    Copy the source files and retain their original format, names and metadata. Define the intended use and which defects matter to intelligibility or historical fidelity. Create a working version and log exact time locations for clicks, hum, clipping, steady noise or missing audio.

  2. Classify defects before choosing processing

    Listen through representative passages and inspect the waveform or spectrum in audio software. Separate constant background noise from intermittent clicks, wind, reverberation and overload. Measure signal and noise only with compatible segments and settings; a single SNR number does not identify the defect or establish recoverability.

  3. Trial one targeted repair on a copy

    Choose a short passage containing both the defect and useful quiet content. For steady-noise reduction, use a representative noise-only profile from that recording. Preview conservative settings and, where supported, listen to the removed residue for damaged speech or musical detail. Use another repair method for a different defect type.

  4. Compare intelligibility and artifacts

    Level match the original and processed passage, then check consonants, breaths, transients, stereo image and decay tails. Inspect compatible measured RMS levels if useful, but choose processing by the stated restoration goal. Retain a less-processed version when stronger cleanup introduces modulation or watery artifacts.

  5. Apply and review the complete program

    Apply the accepted settings to appropriate regions, preserving edits and versions. Listen across boundaries and changing noise conditions; do not assume one profile fits every section. Remeasure peaks after all processing and flag irrecoverable sections rather than describing a guessed reconstruction as the original.

  6. Export with a restoration record

    Export the requested master and a reference comparison where useful. Reopen the actual files, verify duration and channels, and save the defect log, process settings and known limitations. Archive the unmodified source so later tools or editorial decisions can be applied again.
