Sound Design: Brief, Layers and Asset Delivery

Build a sound from a clear brief, audition layers in context and export named assets with documented variations, levels and source rights.

Workflow

  1. Define the sound’s role and constraints

    Write what the sound communicates, where it plays and the required duration, variations, loop behavior and channel format. Record source ownership or license constraints. Choose a reference scene or interaction in which the sound will be judged, rather than designing only in isolation.

  2. Gather and label source material

    Record or select source sounds with useful attack and decay handles. Name files by source and take, keep clean originals and record microphone or synthesis settings when relevant. Estimate storage for the expected PCM inventory and preserve source/license notes alongside the audio.

  3. Build a small set of purposeful layers

    Separate attack, body and tail roles, and audition each layer’s contribution in the intended scene. Check timing, phase interaction and mono compatibility when combining related sounds. Remove layers that mask the cue’s function rather than assuming more layers create a better result.

  4. Shape envelopes and dynamics

    Use editing, filtering, pitch or modulation to support the brief, then compare at matched output level. If using compression, inspect the static threshold/ratio/makeup curve and audition the real attack and release. Measure actual combined peaks; digital layers are not an uncorrelated acoustic SPL sum.

  5. Test variations in their playback context

    Try the asset in the intended scene or interactive engine, including repetition, quiet playback and overlapping events. Check loop seams, random-variation transitions and excessive tails. Use compatible RMS measurements to describe variation levels without equating that difference to standardized loudness range.

  6. Export and document the asset set

    Export the requested sample rate, stored width, channel layout and naming scheme. Reopen files and verify tails, duration, loops and peak behavior. Deliver the asset manifest, use restrictions, variation rules and editable source session with the approved version.
