Ski Mountaineering Crampon Preparation

Prepare an equipment review and supervised practice session for ski mountaineering, with boot compatibility, route questions and primary references.

Ski mountaineers reviewing equipment with an instructor or guide

Workflow

  1. Identify the exact equipment and intended terrain

List the boot, crampon, binding-system and ice-axe models. Distinguish ski crampons attached to touring bindings from boot crampons used for walking or climbing; their compatibility and use are different.

  2. Verify fit against manufacturer instructions

Check the exact boot and crampon combination, the selected toe and heel attachment, adjustment and intended use with a qualified person. A matching shoe size or weight figure does not establish compatibility.

  3. Practise transitions and movement under instruction

Arrange a suitable low-consequence practice setting to learn equipment use with the loaded pack and gloves. The instructor should determine when the group is ready for the intended terrain and which skills need more work.

  4. Review route limits before committing

Discuss exposed sections, transition locations, retreat options and any glacier or rope-system requirements with the guide. Stay well away from cornices and uncertain ridge edges; probing an overhang is not a way to establish a safe edge.

Boot and crampon systemsStandard

Petzl describes different crampon attachment systems and boot interfaces. Consult the current manual for your exact combination and verify the physical fit.

Cornices and uncertain edgesSafety

Cornices can conceal the true edge of a ridge and collapse. NPS advises staying well away from them and limiting exposure below them.

  • Fit and skill are separate

A properly fitted crampon does not teach movement, self-arrest, glacier travel or rope techniques.

Safety Notes

  • Use qualified mountaineering instruction. This equipment-review plan does not provide technical climbing or rescue procedures.
