Solar EV Charging: Energy, Timing and Verified Settings

Workflow

  1. Establish EV energy and charging availability

    Record driving distance, battery-side energy consumption, actual AC-to-battery charging efficiency and the hours the vehicle is connected. Keep vehicle AC acceptance, configured EVSE power and the site electrical limit as distinct constraints. Decide whether the objective is annual energy offset or direct daytime solar use.

  2. Obtain site-specific AC production evidence

    Use a site model or measured AC production profile with orientation, shading, weather and inverter assumptions recorded. For a module operating-point estimate, distinguish irradiance and cell temperature from an integrated yield. Record available array area and actual module ratings for the design team.

  3. Compare annual offset and direct charging cases

    Calculate the DC nameplate needed for annual EV energy using the site’s annual AC yield. Then use chronological PV and household-load intervals to compare solar-only modulation with grid-assisted charging. Include minimum stable charge power and stop at the intended battery-energy target.

  4. Review tariff and installation choices

    Value self-used solar and exported energy under the current utility tariff, including credit usability and additional charges. Coordinate the actual PV, inverter, EVSE, metering, permits and interconnection with the project team. Review service demand and the configured EV circuit before equipment selection is finalized.
