Plan a Remote Work Setup

Confirm remote work requirements, budget equipment and energy, compare commute changes and agree a workable schedule with clear responsibilities.

Workflow

  1. Confirm the work arrangement before buying equipment

Record permitted work locations, hours, availability, required software and security procedures. Ask who provides equipment, owns it and pays for approved expenses. Confirm reimbursement limits and process in writing. Check connectivity against the actual applications and employer requirements.

  2. Evaluate the workstation and equipment budget

Use the OSHA workstation checklist to assess positioning, lighting and equipment fit. Inventory what you already have and obtain quotes only for needed items. Record purchase, installation and recurring costs separately. Request employer guidance for accessibility or equipment needs.

  3. Compare operating cost and commute changes

Estimate equipment electricity from entered wattage, hours and tariff. Compare the previous and proposed commute pattern with actual attendance days, fixed costs and setup costs. Keep travel time separate from money and retain car costs that will continue.

  4. Agree boundaries and test the working week

Allocate work, breaks, household tasks, care and rest without counting the same hour twice. Discuss response expectations, focused work, meetings and handoffs with the team. Test access, audio and backup contact arrangements before the first remote workday.

  5. Review expenses, tax questions and what changed

Retain receipts and employer reimbursement decisions. Do not assume a home office or equipment expense is deductible. Check current rules for your employment status, tax year and location; IRS Publication 587 addresses qualifying business use of home. Review workload and actual costs after a representative period.

Reference Materials

Workstation evaluationStandard

OSHA provides evaluation and purchasing checklists for computer workstations. Use the checklist with your actual equipment and working conditions.

Business use of a homeStandard

IRS Publication 587 explains qualification and calculation rules for business use of home. Employee expense treatment and qualifying self-employment expenses require their respective current rules.

Remote-work cost methodStandard

Equipment energy uses entered power and usage. The commute comparison separates cash costs from travel hours; switching locations does not automatically eliminate fixed vehicle costs.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Use employer-approved access, software and security procedures.
  • Check work-location and expense rules before relying on a relocation or tax assumption.
