Prepare a Salary Discussion

Research relevant pay evidence, document your contribution and model a proposed increase before discussing and recording compensation terms.

Workflow

  1. Clarify the role and compensation basis

Record responsibilities, location, working hours, employment type and the employer’s stated range. Separate base, variable pay and benefits before comparing figures. Convert hourly and annual amounts using the actual work assumptions, and note the date of every comparison.

  2. Collect relevant evidence without overstating it

Use BLS occupational and regional wage data as context, checking the occupation, geography and survey period. Gather your own outcomes, added responsibilities and feedback. Distinguish individual contributions from team results and keep confidential employer data out of external materials.

  3. Choose a specific proposal and alternatives

Decide what you want to request and what other terms matter, such as scope, schedule or review timing. Model the proposed percentage increase and compare written packages if available. Treat any retained-increase tax rate as an assumption, not a full paycheck calculation.

  4. Prepare a clear discussion and record the response

Draft a concise explanation connecting the request to the work and evidence. Practice answering questions, select a suitable communication channel and ask about the decision process. Record what was agreed, what remains open and when to follow up.

  5. Verify the final written compensation change

Check the amount, effective date, role changes and any conditions in writing. Recalculate the gross difference, then reconcile an actual pay statement after the change. If a promised change is missing, use the employer’s payroll or HR process with the relevant documents.

Reference Materials

Use occupational wage evidence carefullyStandard

BLS wage statistics provide occupation and area context. Compare definitions and dates before using them in a salary discussion.

Prepare compensation questionsStandard

CareerOneStop includes ways to discuss salary expectations and learn about the position. Adapt questions to the actual conversation.

Increment-only tax scenarioStandard

The raise worksheet applies the entered incremental tax rate only to the additional pay. It does not apply that marginal rate to the entire salary or forecast the employer’s decision.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Keep compensation evidence truthful and respect confidentiality obligations.
  • Check the applicable agreement and local pay-transparency or salary-history rules when relevant.
