Plan a Small Business Launch

Test customer demand, estimate startup costs and unit economics, check launch requirements and define a limited, measurable first offering.

Workflow

  1. Define the customer problem and test demand

Write the customer, problem, current alternative and proposed offering. Examine competitors and speak with potential customers using a clear research question. Record evidence, objections and uncertainties. Decide what you need to learn before spending more on development or launch.

  2. Separate startup cash and recurring operating costs

Collect quotes for setup, equipment, inventory, licenses, insurance and the work needed to deliver. Separate one-time costs, recurring costs and customer payment timing. For a service, estimate a rate floor from costs and realistic billable capacity. Keep personal household funding separate from business operating assumptions.

  3. Test unit economics under explicit assumptions

For an offering with a meaningful unit, enter its price, variable unit cost and fixed costs for a matching period. Check the break-even volume against production capacity and actual demand evidence. Test a changed-price or changed-cost case and record the assumptions.

  4. Verify the launch and operating requirements

Check structure, registration, tax IDs, licensing, insurance, contracts, privacy and sector requirements for the location and activity. Record responsible authorities and current instructions. Confirm ownership and work obligations if the venture is being developed alongside employment.

  5. Launch a bounded test and review actual evidence

Define the smallest offering that can test your key question, its cost limit, delivery scope and review criteria. Allocate the work in a feasible week. After the test, compare collected revenue, costs, customer feedback and delivery effort with the assumptions, then decide the next experiment.

Reference Materials

Plan from market and cost evidenceStandard

SBA planning guidance covers customer research, competition, business planning and startup costs. Use current local and sector evidence in the plan.

Verify launch requirementsStandard

SBA’s business guide links structure, registration, tax IDs, licensing, banking and insurance topics. The responsible authorities determine your actual requirements.

Distinguish tax componentsStandard

Where self-employment rules apply, the IRS tax center separates business profit, income-tax and self-employment-tax questions. Entity and jurisdiction rules need separate review.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Check applicable licensing, tax, contract and sector rules before launching.
  • Respect employment, intellectual-property and confidentiality obligations.
