Drywall Calculator

Plan whole drywall sheets from measured wall and ceiling faces, openings, explicit allowance, exact selected sheet dimensions, and price.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Measured wall and ceiling face areas, measured openings, explicit area allowance, exact selected sheet dimensions and price
Output to expect
Gross/net/planned face area, exact sheet area, whole sheet count, purchased area and entered sheet cost
How it works
Subtract measured openings, apply only the entered area allowance and round planned area upward by one exact selected sheet size
  • Verify board type/thickness/edge, wall/ceiling suitability, framing/orientation, fire/sound/moisture assemblies and local code/manufacturer instructions before purchase.
  • Complete panel layout, backing/joints, fastening/adhesive, compound/tape/finish level, lifting/cutting/dust controls, access and delivery separately.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Convert measured wall/ceiling net face area to one exact sheet size using an explicit allowance without fabricating fastener, compound, tape or board-type prescriptions.

DIY remodeler measuring one room

Turn measured faces and openings into whole selected sheets.

Enter wall/ceiling areas, openings, allowance and exact sheet size.

Gets scoped sheet arithmetic without a fixed 4×8 or 10% assumption.

Estimator separating board assemblies

Avoid mixing wall, ceiling, moisture or fire-rated products in one quantity.

Run distinct records for areas using each exact board type, thickness and size.

Retains assembly selection outside the area calculation.

Installer planning handling and layout

Keep area coverage from masquerading as a panel layout or finish schedule.

Use purchased area as an initial record, then complete orientation, seams, backing, fastening, finish and delivery plans.

Does not receive invented screw, compound or tape quantities.

Reference & details

How it works

Measured net face area

Measured openings are removed from the combined wall and ceiling face area.

Net area = wall area + ceiling area − measured openings

Explicit planned area

Only the entered layout/damage allowance expands the measured net area.

Planned area = net area × (1 + entered allowance%)

Exact sheet conversion

Planned area divides by the exact selected sheet area and rounds upward to whole sheets.

Sheets = ceil(planned area ÷ (exact sheet width × exact sheet length))

Example Scenarios

A remodeler totals wall and ceiling faces and subtracts only measured openings.

An estimator runs wall, ceiling, moisture or fire-rated board areas separately using each exact sheet product.

An installer compares area-derived sheets with a panel-by-panel layout before ordering and delivery.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming every job uses 4×8 sheets and 10% extra

Enter the exact selected sheet and an allowance justified by the actual layout.

Inventing screws, compound or tape from sheet count

Use the approved assembly, fastening and finish specification plus exact product coverage.

FAQ

It supports mixed wall/ceiling zones and preserves the measurements used by the actual takeoff instead of hiding them behind one room preset.

Subtract only measured openings the panel layout will not cover. Small openings may create cutouts without reducing purchased whole sheets.

Use the actual sheet layout, seams, cutouts, handling damage reserve and supplier plan. The calculator adds no standard percentage.

Keep areas requiring different board type, thickness, size, edge or assembly in separate records so each result stays tied to one exact sheet.
