Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Reconcile measured hardwood areas, random-length inventory, actual carton coverage and whole-carton cost without assuming a fixed board count.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Exact hardwood/carton source, measured non-overlapping areas, coverage or measured random-length stock, explicit reserve and loss, optional quote
Output to expect
Net area, usable stock, whole cartons, actual purchased coverage, remainder and optional flooring-only cost
How it works
Sum measured rectangles less exclusions; reconcile chosen loss and reserve against one inventory basis, then round to actual carton coverage
  • Random-length inventory is measured as usable face area, not an average-length promise. Area coverage does not prove a workable cutting mix.
  • An area-based quote charges all purchased carton coverage. No universal loss, acclimation, gap or installed-cost rule is supplied.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Reconcile a source-bearing multi-area hardwood takeoff, actual carton coverage and usable random-length inventory without an invented fixed board count.

Homeowner ordering a measured room

Know what whole cartons actually deliver and cost.

Record measured rectangles and exclusions, enter the exact carton and explicit reserve, inspect delivered coverage and price.

Distinguishes need, purchased coverage and carton remainder without an automatic waste rule.

Installer with mixed-length stock

Credit only usable matching board coverage.

Choose measured same-width length bins, verify counts and usable lengths, then reconcile the carton order.

Does not count area inventory twice or mistake coverage for a workable cutting mix.

Metric procurement reviewer

Keep source measurements and the quote basis traceable in a Project.

Change display units, edit one measured value, select the quote area unit, download and explicitly save/reload.

Original values/units and independent Hardwood provenance survive without converting currencies.

How it works

Measured takeoff

Keep each area non-overlapping and attached to one exact product and measured scope. Exclusions cannot exceed their rectangle.

Net area = sum(width × length − excluded area)

Random-length usable inventory

Measured board bins and documented coverage are alternative inventory bases. Neither an average board length nor an area total proves that the available cutting mix works.

Usable inventory area = effective face width × sum(usable length × whole boards)

Whole-carton purchase

Use the package label and explicit additional allowance. Per-area quotes charge all purchased carton coverage, not only the unrounded need.

Cartons = ceil(max(0, net area × (1 + allowance) + reserve − usable stock) ÷ actual carton coverage)

Example Scenarios

With zero additional allowance, 5 ft² reserve and no stock, 185 ft² need rounds to 9 cartons delivering 198 ft². At 60 per carton, flooring-only cost is 540 in the entered currency.

Twelve usable 48-inch boards and twelve 24-inch boards at 3.25-inch effective width supply 19.5 ft². The same 185 ft² demand then needs 8 cartons at 22 ft² each; cut suitability still needs review.

Name each measured rectangle, exclude only measured unfloored areas, choose the quote’s own ft² or m² basis and price all delivered coverage. Display-unit changes do not alter the raw measurements or quote basis.

FAQ

Random-length hardwood does not have one reliable plank length. The tool uses exact carton area and measured usable inventory. A cutting schedule must separately reconcile lengths, defects and reusable pieces.

No. Enter the allowance justified by the specific product, layout and takeoff. Keep repair reserve separate and avoid adding losses twice.

No. Use the exact current product instructions and site evidence. Quantity arithmetic does not choose an installation method or approve substrate, moisture or movement provisions.

They are alternative bases for the same stock, not additive credits. Switching basis retains the inactive draft but excludes it from the current calculation.

Only the entered flooring quote applied to full cartons. Tax, shipping, labor, preparation, accessories and currency conversion are excluded. A blank price remains unestimated.

About Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Build one source-bearing hardwood takeoff from up to six non-overlapping rectangles. Choose documented area inventory or measured same-width boards of varying lengths. Reconcile an explicit allowance, repair reserve and real carton coverage before pricing every carton purchased.
