Workflow

  1. Define what you want to learn and who may help

Identify questions about a role, industry or problem. Map existing colleagues, alumni, peers and communities with relevant experience. Record why each connection is relevant and an appropriate way to contact them, keeping personal details only as needed and with respect for privacy.

  2. Choose accessible conversations and events

Evaluate an event or community using its actual topics, audience, fees, access and schedule. Compare travel costs when useful, and allocate time you can sustain. Choose a small next action rather than assuming attendance will produce referrals.

  3. Prepare an informational conversation

Draft a respectful request explaining what you hope to learn and allow the person to decline. If they agree, prepare questions about real work, skills and entry paths. Listen, respect the agreed time and record insights and any permission to reconnect.

  4. Maintain useful, respectful follow-up

Follow through on anything you agreed to send. Share relevant information where welcome and record a next contact action only when appropriate. If a verified job lead emerges, create an application record with the source and required next step. Review which conversations helped answer your original questions.
