How it works

Preserve Explicit Active Raster Records

Enter positive safe whole dimensions from named records. A storage raster, line count or nickname alone may not establish active display geometry when sample aspect ratio, clean aperture, orientation, display matrix, prior crop or scaling differs. Resolve and document those properties before using this arithmetic.

Keep Axis and Sample Ratios Separate

When both axes double, sample count quadruples. Unlike rasters can have different horizontal and vertical ratios, so one sample-count ratio must not be described as a linear scale factor or a scaling instruction.

Use Decimal Megapixels and Independent Counts Carefully

Decimal megapixels are only a convenient count unit. They do not represent file size, memory, bitrate, compression, visual detail or quality. Preserve each signed difference to locate a record or arithmetic mismatch, then inspect the responsible media and specification.

Example Scenarios

A 1,920×1,080 active raster contains 2,073,600 samples (2.0736 decimal MP). A 3,840×2,160 active raster contains 8,294,400 samples (8.2944 decimal MP): 2× each axis and 4× total samples. Those ratios do not predict quality, bitrate, storage or processing time.

Enter each exact width and height rather than selecting one generic 4K preset. A 4,096×2,160 raster simplifies to 256:135, so its horizontal and sample ratios differ from a 3,840×2,160 record even though both have 2,160 lines.

A nonzero signed difference can reveal a mistyped dimension, storage-versus-active raster mismatch or different aperture/pixel-aspect basis. It does not prove which record is correct or approve an encoding or delivery change.
