Workflow

  1. Plan Storage Requirements

    15 minutes

    Calculate total storage needed for raw footage, project files, and rendered outputs.

  2. Estimate Render Time

    10 minutes

    Calculate expected render duration based on project length, effects complexity, and hardware capabilities.

Recommended Bitrates by PlatformTable

Target export bitrates for common delivery platforms.

YouTube8 Mbps12 Mbps35–45 Mbps
Instagram/Reels5 Mbps8 Mbps15 Mbps
Broadcast/TV25 Mbps50 Mbps100 Mbps

Storage Estimation FormulaFormula

File size (GB) ≈ Bitrate (Mbps) × Duration (minutes) × 60 ÷ 8 ÷ 1024.

Render Time FactorsTable

Variables affecting export/render duration.

FactorImpactExample
ResolutionQuadratic4K = 4× 1080p render time
CodecMajorH.265 = 2–3× slower than H.264
Effects/Color GradeHighHeavy grades add 50–200% time
HardwareMajorGPU = 3–10× faster than CPU
  • Edit with Proxies

    4K and 6K footage chokes most laptops. Create 1080p proxy files for editing, then relink to originals for final export.

  • Color Grade in Dedicated Software

    DaVinci Resolve's free tier outperforms most NLE built-in color tools. Round-trip via XML/AAF for best results.

  • Export Multiple Formats at Once

    Use Adobe Media Encoder or FFmpeg batch jobs to export platform-specific versions overnight from a single master.

  • Monitor Storage During Shoot

    Running out of card space mid-shoot is unrecoverable. Calculate needed storage before every shoot day.

Safety Notes

  • Ensure proper licensing for all music, stock footage, and fonts used in commercial projects — copyright claims can demonetize or remove content.
  • Long render sessions generate significant heat — ensure adequate ventilation around workstations to prevent thermal throttling or hardware damage.
