Deck Stain Calculator

Plan measured stain surfaces and pass-specific coverage ranges. Reconcile exact product stock, real containers and optional quotes without invented railing or stair factors.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Measured surface/pass rows, exact pass-specific stain spread, matching stock, actual container and optional quote
Output to expect
Source-specific quantity endpoints, actual whole-package purchases, unknown-versus-zero prices and complete source JSON
How it works
Sum area × repetitions / each pass spread, add entered extras, subtract usable matching stock and round to real containers
  • Source changes invalidate dependent values; invalid inputs never leave stale outputs available to export. Other tools and saved Projects stay separate.
  • Review current label/TDS/SDS and physical conditions. No universal coverage, coat, loss, drying, preparation or application approval is inferred.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Create measured stain pass records with source-specific spread and reconciled real containers.

Deck owner measuring a maintenance scope

Avoid invented railing and stair quantities.

Enter measured surfaces and separate first/second spread ranges; review their volume sums.

Can reproduce each pass without treating arithmetic as application approval.

Estimator checking a quote

Retain original units and actual stock/package evidence.

Switch display units, revise the package and renew the cleared quote, then download the full record.

Both endpoints reconcile to the exact source values.

Mobile reviewer

Correct an invalid spread range without losing other rows.

Use linked errors, recover inputs, review a narrow-screen result and reset only this draft.

No stale result is exported and other tool/Project records are unchanged.

Authoritative checks for this tool

Outputs and checklists are planning aids. Review the linked current authorities and the records, terms, instructions, and requirements that apply to your exact situation before a consequential decision.

How it works

Measure actual treated faces

Measure included faces and exclusions. Railing length, step count and wood species do not establish treated area or coverage. Repeated pass rows do not add up to unique deck footprint.

Each row demand = measured net area × reviewed repetitions

Use each pass coverage

First and subsequent passes can have different label or sample spread. Enter their evidence separately. A specific product instruction never establishes a rule for every stain.

Base volume endpoints = sum(row demand ÷ row upper/lower spread)

Reconcile real purchases

Round only at the purchase stage. Blank price is unknown, zero is explicit. Product and package changes invalidate dependent source values.

Containers = ceil(max(0, base + entered allowance + reserve − matching stock) ÷ container volume)

Example Scenarios

Illustrative first spread 250–300 ft²/US gal and second 500–600 produce 1.5–1.8 US gal base. With zero extras and stock, two 1-US-gal containers cover the arithmetic endpoints; this is not a product recommendation.

Create separate rows for actual included faces with their own coverage evidence. Do not assume one railing foot equals three square feet.

Subtract only verified usable matching stain. A partly used package is not assumed full. Actual condition and compatibility need separate review.

FAQ

No. Use the exact product, substrate condition, application method and representative sample or current label/TDS. The tool does not invent a rate.

Not necessarily. Use separate rows when the source rates differ; repetitions apply only to that row's reviewed rate.

Follow the current label/TDS/SDS and responsible site review. The calculator gives no universal drying, moisture, preparation or return-to-use rule.

No. One record uses one exact product/color/container. Download each record separately; do not pool stock across unlike products.

Not currently. Export the complete JSON record. Changing this draft does not modify existing saved Projects.

About Deck Stain Calculator

Build a source-owned stain quantity record for measured decking, rails, stairs and edges. Different passes can have different spread ranges; all rows use one exact product. Retain original units and download complete arithmetic before purchasing.
