Heart-Rate Range Calculator

Calculate a user-entered heart-rate-reserve percentage range with the Tanaka age-estimated maximum. Shows formula and limits; never prescribes training zones.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Age (adult estimate), Entered resting heart rate (bpm), Lower intensity (% of HR reserve), Upper intensity (% of HR reserve)
Output to expect
Heart-Rate Range Arithmetic
  • Check the units and required inputs before comparing results.
  • Keep the assumptions with a copied result so you can reproduce the calculation later.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Calculate one user-entered percentage range through the Tanaka age-estimated maximum and heart-rate-reserve equation without naming zones or prescribing exercise.

Adult with an externally selected range

Convert a known HRR percentage range to bpm.

Enter adult age, measured resting heart rate, and lower/upper percentages.

Gets reproducible arithmetic with formula and limitations visible.

Medication-aware user

Avoid generic age-zone advice that conflicts with health context.

Read the medication/condition boundary and use the tool only after appropriate guidance.

Sees no fat-burn, HIIT, calorie, or named-zone recommendation.

User with invalid or concerning values

Receive a safe, specific error rather than a misleading range.

Enter reversed percentages or resting HR at/above the estimated maximum.

Calculation stops and directs the user away from using the result for exercise decisions.

How it works

Age-Estimated Maximum Heart Rate

The Tanaka equation is a population prediction for healthy adults, not a measurement of an individual's maximum heart rate.

Age-estimated maximum HR = 208 − (0.7 × age)

Heart-Rate Reserve Arithmetic

The calculation uses the resting heart rate and lower/upper percentages entered by the user. The percentages are not selected or approved by this tool.

Calculated HR = resting HR + ((estimated maximum HR − resting HR) × entered percentage)

Interpretation Boundary

Medications, heart conditions, measurement method, environment, and individual response can change heart rate. The result is not medical clearance, a named training zone, or a workout prescription.

Use only an intensity range already selected with appropriate guidance

Example Scenarios

Reproducing the arithmetic for a user-entered range without assigning it a training-zone name or purpose.

Age: 40Resting HR: 60 bpmEntered range: 50–70% HRR

Estimated maximum: 180 bpm; HR reserve: 120 bpm; calculated range: 120–144 bpm

Record the limitation and use a range supplied by an appropriate clinician or qualified professional instead of relying on a generic age estimate.

Context: Medication or known conditionDecision owner: Qualified professional

Do not treat the calculator result as a prescribed range or exercise clearance

Entering a lower percentage that is not below the upper percentage returns a specific error instead of a misleading bpm range.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating an age equation as an individual's measured maximum heart rate

Save 208 − 0.7 × age as a population estimate and record the formula, resting measurement, medication/condition context, and approving owner.

Calling generic percentage bands fat-burn, recovery, threshold, or HIIT zones

This tool calculates only the percentage range entered. Training names, purposes, and sessions require an appropriate individualized plan.

FAQ

The arithmetic is reproducible for the values entered, but the age-estimated maximum is a population prediction rather than an individual measurement. Medications, conditions, measurement quality, and environment can materially change interpretation.

Yes, our Heart Rate Zone Calculator is completely free with no registration required. There are no usage limits, hidden fees, or account setup — just open the tool and calculate.

Yes, the Heart Rate Zone Calculator is fully responsive and works on all devices including phones, tablets, and desktops. All calculations run in your browser for fast, private results.

No. It does not diagnose, provide medical clearance, select intensity percentages, name training zones, or prescribe workouts. Seek appropriate medical evaluation for concerning symptoms and qualified guidance when health or medication context affects exercise.

Enter heart rate in beats per minute and intensity as a percentage of heart-rate reserve. Age is limited to the adult range shown beside the field.
