Macro Calculator

Convert a user-selected energy total and carbohydrate, protein, and fat percentages into calories and grams with adult AMDR context.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
A user-selected energy total from 500–10,000 kcal plus carbohydrate, protein, and fat percentages from 0–100 that total exactly 100%
Output to expect
Calories and grams allocated to carbohydrate, protein, and fat, plus whether all three percentages sit within the adult AMDR ranges
How it works
Entered energy × entered percentage, divided by 4 kcal/g for carbohydrate and protein or 9 kcal/g for fat
  • The tool converts a total you already selected; it does not estimate energy needs or endorse the entered distribution.
  • Adult AMDR ranges are reference context, not a prescription and not automatically applicable to children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness, or therapeutic diets.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Convert a user-selected energy total and three percentages into transparent macro calories and grams without estimating needs or prescribing a diet.

Arithmetic converter

Convert a known 2,000 kcal total and 50/20/30 split.

Enter the energy and percentages, confirm the 100% total, and inspect calories plus grams.

Gets 250g carbohydrate, 100g protein, and about 66.7g fat with exact calorie allocation.

Input-error checker

Catch an incomplete percentage allocation.

Enter percentages totaling 90% and inspect the validation state.

Receives a clear error and no plausible-looking result.

Specialized-pattern user

Distinguish arithmetic validity from nutrition endorsement.

Enter a split outside adult AMDR ranges and read scope/context.

Understands the tool calculated the entry but did not recommend it or estimate calorie needs.

How it works

Calorie-to-Gram Conversion

The arithmetic uses the conventional general factors of 4 kcal per gram for protein and carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram for fat.

Protein (g) = (Calories × Protein %) ÷ 4 | Carbs (g) = (Calories × Carb %) ÷ 4 | Fat (g) = (Calories × Fat %) ÷ 9

Adult AMDR Context

For adults, the Dietary Reference Intakes list acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges of 45–65% carbohydrate, 10–35% protein, and 20–35% fat. These population ranges are context, not an individualized target.

Carbohydrate % + Protein % + Fat % = 100%

Scope

The tool does not infer energy needs from body measurements and does not automatically apply adult ranges to children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medical conditions, or therapeutic diets. Use qualified nutrition guidance for those contexts.

Example Scenarios

Converting a preselected energy total without implying that 2,000 kcal fits a particular person.

Calories: 2,000Carbs: 50%Protein: 20%Fat: 30%

Carbohydrate: 250g, Protein: 100g, Fat: 66.7g

Checking that three entered percentages total exactly 100% before conversion.

Calories: 2,800Protein: 40%Carbs: 30%Fat: 25%

The tool rejects the entries if they do not total exactly 100%

A user sees that an outside-AMDR split can be calculated arithmetically but is not endorsed and may require qualified guidance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming the calculator estimated calorie needs

It only converts the energy total you entered. The source and appropriateness of that number remain your responsibility.

Treating adult AMDR ranges as a personal prescription

The ranges are population reference context. Age, pregnancy or breastfeeding, illness, medications, and therapeutic diets can require different evaluation.

FAQ

No. It requires an energy total chosen elsewhere and converts only the percentages you enter.

The three entries allocate the complete entered energy total. A total below or above 100% would leave energy unallocated or double-count it.

The cited DRI reference lists 45–65% carbohydrate, 10–35% protein, and 20–35% fat for adults. The interface labels them as context, not personal targets.

No. It is arithmetic, not medical nutrition therapy. Seek a registered dietitian or qualified clinician for individualized or therapeutic planning.

The entered energy is multiplied by each percentage, then carbohydrate and protein calories are divided by 4 and fat calories by 9.
