Workflow

  1. Define learning goals and practical constraints

List the work you want to learn, your current evidence and the dates and hours you can commit. Check school requirements, work authorization and funding conditions where relevant. Compare the internship’s actual duties with your goals rather than relying on a title or employer reputation.

  2. Verify postings, deadlines and compensation

Create a record for each verified internship, including its location, application deadline and stated pay. Ask about duties, supervision, training, duration and expenses. If unpaid, review the applicable rules; U.S. for-profit internship analysis considers the overall primary-beneficiary factors, not academic credit alone.

  3. Tailor evidence and submit the required materials

Build a resume around relevant coursework, projects, volunteering and paid work. Explain your role and verified results. Follow the posting instructions, check the exported file and submit through the verified channel. Record the materials version and confirmation.

  4. Prepare for selection and compare written terms

Prepare examples of learning, collaboration and problem solving. Ask about supervision, feedback and the expected work. Compare a paid offer using the actual hourly rate and work assumptions, then record travel, housing or other costs separately. Confirm start/end dates and conditions in writing.

  5. Track the learning plan and next decision

At the start, agree learning objectives, feedback points and a process for questions. Retain work samples only with permission. Review what you learned and update your resume with accurate outcomes. Record any return-offer discussion separately from an actual offer.

Reference Materials

Unpaid internships require a contextual analysisStandard

DOL Fact Sheet 71 describes seven primary-beneficiary factors for internships at for-profit employers. Academic credit is one factor; no single factor controls.

Use relevant experienceStandard

A resume can explain relevant work and projects through the responsibilities and outcomes you can support.

Research the search processStandard

CareerOneStop provides applications, interview preparation and employer-research resources. Check each internship’s own dates and instructions.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Confirm the applicable wage, school and work-authorization rules for your arrangement.
  • Do not retain confidential work or publish samples without permission.
