Solar Battery Backup: Loads, Limits and Outage Cases

Workflow

  1. Define the outage loads and operating boundary

    Choose the loads to be backed up, their daily energy, simultaneous W/VA and startup events. Record the required outage duration, expected initial SOC and whether the PV system can operate while isolated from the grid. Identify any essential service that needs a separate contingency.

  2. Verify inverter, battery and charging constraints

    Compare the actual inverter’s continuous W/VA and timed peak limits against simultaneous load events. Check minimum loaded and maximum charged battery voltage, continuous/peak DC current and supported battery controls. Where a separate PV controller is used, check its actual input and charging constraints.

  3. Commission approved transfer and load behavior

    Have the installation commissioned under its manufacturer, electrical and utility requirements. Verify supported isolation/transfer operation, backed-up circuits, load shedding, charging settings and recovery from a controlled outage test. Retain observed behavior and limits without intentionally exceeding battery or inverter ratings.

  • Keep reserve visible

    A tariff schedule that leaves a low starting SOC changes the outage case even when battery nameplate capacity stays the same.

  • Recheck small essential loads

    Networking, controls and continuous standby can matter over a long outage despite modest instantaneous power.

  • Backup transfer, grid isolation, batteries and protection must use the approved design and qualified installation/commissioning process.
  • Do not use damaged batteries or bypass manufacturer operating, temperature or BMS limits.
