How it works

Finished Size

Divide stitch count by fabric count (holes per inch). A 140×200 stitch design on 14-count Aida finishes at 10×14.3 inches.

Size (in) = Stitches ÷ Fabric count

Fabric Count Conversion

Same design on higher count fabric finishes smaller. Moving from 14 to 28 count halves each dimension.

New size = Original size × (Old count ÷ New count)

Fabric Allowance

Add 3 inches minimum margin on all sides for framing and hoop clearance. Large designs may need 4–6 inches.

Fabric needed = Design size + 3 inches each side

Design finishes at 8.75×12.5 inches. Order 15×19 inch fabric piece with 3-inch margins for 12×16 frame.

Target 8×10 inch finished size for 140-stitch width design requires 17.5-count fabric — use 18-count and accept 7.8 inch width or adjust design.

Sampler with 300×400 stitches on 14-count yields 21.4×28.6 inches — verify wall space before starting year-long project.

Fabric count is holes (or threads) per inch. 14-count Aida has 14 holes per inch. Higher count = smaller finished size and finer detail. 28-count linen stitched over 2 equals 14-count size.

Minimum 3 inches on each side for framing and hoop movement. Large projects and Q-snap frames may need 4–6 inches. Never start stitching at fabric edge.
