How it works

Cross-Count Resize

Moving from 14 to 18 count reduces finished size — multiply stitch count by 14/18 to maintain same inches. Results in fractional stitches at edges.

New stitches = Original stitches × (New count ÷ Old count)

Dimension Target Resize

Multiply all stitch counts by scale factor. Non-integer stitch counts require rounding or design modification.

Scale factor = Target size ÷ Current size

Aspect Ratio Preservation

Uniform scaling preserves proportions. Non-uniform scaling distorts the design — avoid unless intentionally adapting to specific space.

200×280 stitch design on 14-count (14.3×20 in) resized to 18-count equivalent keeps same size with finer detail — no stitch count change, just fabric swap.

Scale 140×140 design by 0.5× to 70×70 stitches for 5×5 inch ornament on 14-count — verify small text remains legible.

Need 8-inch width from 200-stitch design: required count = 200÷8 = 25-count equivalent — use 28-count over 2 (14 effective) and accept 14.3 inch width or trim design.

FAQ

Geometric and floral patterns resize well. Text, faces, and fine detail may become illegible when scaled down below 50%. Scaling up always works if fabric count increases.

Non-integer stitch counts create partial stitches at edges. Round to nearest whole stitch and adjust border, or use software (PCStitch, WinStitch) for automatic conversion.

Changing count without changing stitches changes finished size. To maintain size on higher count, you need more stitches — effectively a larger pattern.
