How it works

Stitches per Skein

One 8-meter DMC skein covers approximately 1800–2000 full cross stitches using 2 strands on 14-count. Higher count and more strands reduce coverage.

Per-Color Calculation

Divide each color's stitch count by coverage rate. Add 20% buffer for waste, tension variation, and future repairs.

Skeins = Color stitches ÷ Stitches per skein × 1.2

Strand and Count Adjustment

18-count uses fewer stitches per area; 1-strand stitching doubles coverage per skein. Adjust base estimate accordingly.

FAQ

Approximately 1800–2000 full cross stitches using 2 strands on 14-count Aida. Backstitch and partial stitches use less. Variegated and dark colors may require more due to visibility and frogging.

Buy 1 extra skein for any color over 1500 stitches. DMC dye lots vary — buying all skeins of one color at once ensures matching.

Standard: 2 strands for 14-count, 2 strands for 16-count, 1–2 for 18-count, 1 strand for 28-count over 2. Adjust for fabric thread count and desired coverage.

Anchor and DMC skeins are similar length (8m). Cheap bulk floss may be shorter or weaker, requiring more skeins. Stick to one brand per project.

Wind on bobbins organized by color number. Record remaining length if critical for future projects. Leftover skeins from same dye lot are valuable for repairs.
