How it works

Aida to Effective Count

14-count Aida = 14 stitches per inch. Each hole receives one cross stitch.

Effective count = Aida count (stitched over 1 hole)

Evenweave/Linen Over-2

32-count linen stitched over 2 threads = 16 stitches per inch equivalent. 28-count over 2 = 14-count Aida equivalent.

Effective count = Thread count ÷ 2

Finished Size Conversion

Same stitch count on different effective counts produces different finished dimensions. Always use effective count for size calculations.

Example Scenarios

Stitch over 2 on 28-count linen for identical finished size to 14-count Aida — finer fabric texture with same design dimensions.

32-count over 2 = 16 effective count. 200-stitch design finishes at 12.5 inches vs 14.3 on 14-count Aida.

40-count stitched over 1 yields 40 stitches per inch — miniature work with single strand for extreme detail.

FAQ

14 holes per linear inch of fabric. Higher numbers mean smaller holes and finer work. Common counts: 11, 14, 16, 18, 22 (hard to find).

Linen counts threads per inch, not holes. You typically stitch over 2 threads, halving the effective count. 28-count linen over 2 equals 14-count Aida.

Over 1: one stitch per hole/thread group. Over 2: one stitch spanning 2 threads. Over 2 on evenweave produces same size as Aida with softer drape.

Not recommended — finished sizes won't align. If substituting, recalculate all dimensions using effective count conversion.

14-count Aida is standard for beginners — holes are visible and forgiving. Progress to 16 or 18-count as eyesight and technique improve.
