Workflow

  1. Review the actual locations and work scope

    Review and record

    Draw the bathroom and list receptacle locations, fixed equipment and proposed changes. Confirm the adopted requirements for the project, including circuit supply, receptacle placement, GFCI protection and any other applicable protection or device properties. Record the reviewing authority or installer and keep uncertain requirements open.

  2. Map physical devices and intended protected outlets

    Review and record

    Choose a manufacturer-supported protection arrangement with the installer. Assign a physical device ID and circuit ID, then map every outlet it is intended to protect. Distinguish the GFCI receptacle itself from downstream outlets and ensure access for required testing and reset. Record the exact device model and instructions.

  3. Coordinate actual loads and circuit protection

    Review and record

    Have the installer review equipment nameplates, actual intended loads and the applicable bathroom branch-circuit rules. Where a generic continuous-load calculation applies, compare the actual breaker catalog with the verified conductor/equipment ceiling. Screen conductor candidates only under documented installation and terminal conditions.

  4. Finalize the placement and installed scope

    Review and record

    Mark actual receptacle positions, device access and the specified cable route on the plan. Confirm the exact location restrictions and circuit arrangements with the installer; the ordinary wall-span spacing tool is not a substitute for bathroom-specific placement rules. Compare installed scopes including devices, boxes, wall repairs, permits and testing.

  5. Verify installation and test every intended outlet

    Review and record

    Have the authorized installer complete isolation, connections and verification using the exact device instructions, including line/load identification and any required electrical tests. After safe completion, operate the prescribed test/reset controls and verify interruption at every intended protected outlet. Record failed or untested locations explicitly and have problems corrected.

  6. Keep a dated coverage record and repeat the prescribed test

    Review and record

    Save the installed device IDs, circuit mapping, test dates, test results and manufacturer instructions. Provide occupants with accessible test/reset information and the installer’s contact. Follow the manufacturer’s routine and retest after relevant changes or events; keep the portable export alongside the local browser record.

GFCI devices can provide downstream protectionStandard

AFCI addresses certain arc faults; GFCI addresses ground-fault shock hazards. Applicable requirements and supported equipment must be reviewed for the actual project.

Safety Notes

  • Do not make electrical connections in an energized circuit or wet working area. Use authorized, qualified installation and testing procedures.
