Off-Grid Wind: Lulls, Storage and Service Planning

Define essential loads and fallback service, size explicit lull energy and inspect chronological wind, storage, recharge and source-control requirements.

Workflow

  1. Define essential service and fallback supply

    List load energy, operating times, simultaneous power and starting events. Define which services are essential and what happens when wind and stored energy cannot supply them. Put auxiliary/control demand and conversion losses on a common DC-bus basis, with a stated planning season and reporting interval.

  2. Size a stated lull and approved storage envelope

    Choose a documented lull profile and initial SOC, then calculate its positive bus-energy deficits. Record available capacity, the minimum SOC and discharge efficiency, including temperature/age conditions once. Obtain the actual approved battery arrangement and continuous/peak conversion limits before selecting equipment.

  3. Resolve the wind controller and diversion path

    Document the turbine, rectifier, controller and battery/BMS compatibility, including full battery, disabled charging and loss of load. Use the maximum source current and manufacturer-required allowance for diversion. Check the whole voltage range and the installed element’s actual thermal conditions.

  4. Simulate shortages, recharge and control limits

    Run chronological profiles through the entered battery SOC and power limits. Inspect unmet energy, final SOC, recovery time, solar curtailment and required wind diversion. Include long lulls, windy full-battery periods and realistic fallback operation in a broader service study; preserve what the simple profile omits.
