Wind Resource Monitoring: Quality, Curves and Coverage

Workflow

  1. Define the decision and measurement basis

    State whether monitoring supports site selection, hub-height assessment, turbine comparison or operating diagnosis. Record target locations/heights, time resolution and the longer-term reference context. Plan instrumentation, permissions, maintenance and safe access so the intended comparison has defensible data.

  2. Preserve instrument and interval quality records

    Retain instrument model, calibration, orientation, height, exposure and installation/change dates. Check timestamps, missing/duplicate intervals, sensor stalls, icing and altered exposure. Mark rejected intervals explicitly and document the expected period rather than silently normalizing incomplete observations.

  3. Summarize directions, gusts and comparable shear

    Group duration by direction while separating calm observations. Compare speed, kinetic resource and measured gust/turbulence statistics on compatible periods. Derive height shear from matched observations and examine whether one exponent conceals seasonal or directional differences relevant to the project.

  4. Translate the resource through actual turbine curves

    Keep the accepted resource height and density basis with the electrical turbine curve. Integrate speed-duration bins over explicit represented hours, or inspect a justified Weibull fit with shape and scale separately. Compare fit results with actual bins and retain operating cut-out and loss assumptions.
