Wind Tower Height: Resource, Loads and Site Constraints

Workflow

  1. Map candidate locations and practical constraints

    Record candidate tower locations, obstacles, property boundaries, access and maintenance space. Obtain actual height, setback, aviation and other site requirements from the relevant project process. Keep the turbine rotor envelope and the tower’s structural and working areas distinguishable on the plan.

  2. Compare actual curve energy at each height

    Use one turbine curve, one resource period and one loss convention for the height comparison. Adjust each reference speed bin with the stated shear assumption and inspect electrical energy at both heights, including cut-out periods. Compare the extra yield with uncertainty rather than assuming a fixed tower benefit.

  3. Obtain tower reactions and complete foundation design

    Obtain the exact tower/turbine load combinations and soil investigation for each feasible height. The structural team must resolve foundation geometry, reinforcement, anchors, settlement and dynamic/fatigue behavior. Screen actual rectangular gravity-footing candidates only within their stated full-contact static scope.

  4. Compare receptors, access and complete installed scope

    Review sound at the actual receptors with compatible source data and the applicable assessment method. Compare complete tower, foundation, lifting, route and connection quotes and their service implications. Keep resource benefit, project cost and practical maintenance access together in the decision.

  5. Retain the selected height and as-built evidence

    Record the chosen height, resource assumptions, accepted design documents, scope exclusions and approval conditions. Retain the surveyed as-built hub position and commissioning baseline. Compare later observed energy and wind records with the same height and meter basis before attributing a difference to tower performance.
