Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Annual gross ordinary income, federal filing status, and tax year (2025 or 2026)
Output to expect
Simplified federal regular income tax, taxable income, active bracket allocation, marginal/effective rates, after-tax amount, and CSV breakdown
How it works
IRS-published standard deductions and progressive federal brackets; each slice of taxable income is charged only at its applicable marginal rate
  • This excludes credits, itemized deductions, capital gains, self-employment tax, AMT, FICA, and state/local tax, so it is not a filing result.
  • Review the linked IRS source for the selected year and confirm consequential filing decisions with a qualified tax professional.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Estimate US federal income tax from a selected tax year, filing status, gross income, standard deduction, and progressive brackets with explicit scope limits.

Employee planning withholding

Estimate federal income tax and distinguish marginal from effective rate.

Select tax year/status, enter income, and inspect deduction plus bracket-by-bracket tax.

Understands that the top bracket does not apply to all income and that withholding/refund is outside the estimate.

Married household comparer

Compare supported filing statuses for the same gross income.

Hold year/income constant, switch status, and compare taxable income, tax, and effective rate.

Uses only a legally applicable status and does not treat the comparison as filing advice.

Mobile tax planner

Run a current-year rough estimate with source/version visibility.

Confirm the tax year and federal-only scope, choose a preset or income, and review the result on a phone.

Completes the estimate with tap-sized controls and knows credits, payroll/state tax, itemization, and special income are excluded.

How it works

Taxable Income

This simplified path subtracts the selected year's standard deduction from gross ordinary income. It does not model itemized deductions, credits, capital gains, self-employment tax, AMT, FICA, or state/local tax.

Simplified taxable income = max(0, gross ordinary income − standard deduction)

Progressive Brackets

The US uses marginal tax brackets — each portion of income is taxed at its bracket rate, not your entire income at the top rate.

Total Tax = Sum of (Income in Bracket × Bracket Rate)

Official year tables

Bracket boundaries and standard deductions come from IRS-published 2025 and 2026 material. Review the linked IRS source for the selected year because tax law and individual treatment can change.

Example Scenarios

A single employee earning $75,000 before deductions.

Income: $75,000Filing Status: Single

Federal tax ≈ $7,949, effective rate ≈ 10.6%

A dual-income household filing jointly with $150,000 combined income.

Income: $150,000Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly

2025 simplified federal tax ≈ $17,160, marginal rate 22%

A household compares filing statuses and tax years before taking the result to a tax professional for a complete return estimate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying your top marginal rate to all income

Marginal rates apply only to income within each bracket. A $75k earner is not taxed at 22% on the entire amount — only the portion above the bracket threshold.

Forgetting the standard deduction

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income after the standard deduction, not gross salary. Under the enacted 2025 amendment, the single standard deduction is $15,750.

FAQ

Subtract the standard deduction from your gross income to get taxable income. Then apply each tax bracket rate to the portion of income that falls within that bracket. The sum is your total federal income tax.

Your marginal rate is the tax rate on your last dollar of income — the bracket you're in. Your effective rate is total tax divided by gross income, which is always lower because lower brackets are taxed at lower rates.

No. This tool estimates US federal income tax only. State income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and local taxes are not included. Use our Salary Calculator for a fuller take-home estimate.

Choose the status that matches your tax return: Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, or Head of Household. Your filing status determines both the standard deduction and the bracket thresholds.

This calculator uses IRS-published federal tax brackets and standard deductions for 2025 and 2026. Tax law can change — verify current rates on IRS.gov before filing.
