Quarterly Tax Calculator

Allocate a current Form 1040-ES annual payment target after expected withholding, applicable credits, and confirmed estimated payments already made.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Current Form 1040-ES annual payment target, expected withholding/applicable credits, confirmed estimated payments already made, and 1–4 remaining installments to plan
Output to expect
Amount already covered, remaining annual target, equal planning amount, and any amount already above the entered target
How it works
Allocation only: subtract entered credits/payments from an externally determined annual target and divide the remainder across selected future installments
  • Confirm the current worksheet target, credited payments, payment-period requirements, amended-estimate treatment, due dates, and payment method before acting.
  • Equal allocation is not the annualized-income method and does not establish safe-harbor or penalty compliance; state/local estimated taxes require separate current analysis.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Allocate an externally determined current Form 1040-ES annual payment target after withholding, credits, and prior estimated payments without calculating liability or penalty compliance.

Freelancer with a completed worksheet

Turn the current annual target into a transparent remaining-installment plan.

Enter the Form 1040-ES target, applicable withholding/credits, confirmed payments, and remaining installments.

Can reproduce the remaining target and equal planning amount without confusing it with tax liability.

Taxpayer revising midyear

Account for payments already made after a new income estimate.

Recompute the target with current official guidance, enter credited payments, and compare remaining allocation.

Understands amended estimates and prior underpayments may require more than equal division.

Uneven-income taxpayer

Avoid a misleading four-equal-payments rule.

Review the annualized-income method and payment-period requirements before using equal allocation as a planning aid.

Does not treat the output as Form 2210 or penalty-safe-harbor proof.

How it works

External Annual Payment Target

The tool accepts a current annual payment target from Form 1040-ES or another current qualified computation. It does not infer brackets, filing status, self-employment tax, credits, or prior-year rules from income.

Annual Payment Target = Current Official or Qualified Source Input

Subtract Amounts Already Covering the Target

Expected withholding/applicable credits and confirmed federal estimated payments already made reduce the remaining annual target. Inputs must use the same target year and scope.

Remaining Target = max(0, Annual Target − Withholding/Credits − Payments Made)

Equal Planning Allocation Only

Divide the remaining target by the selected number of future installments. Equal division does not establish what was required for earlier or later payment periods and is not the annualized-income method.

Equal Planning Amount = Remaining Target ÷ Remaining Installments

Example Scenarios

A current annual target is $14,000, with $5,000 of expected withholding/credits and $3,000 of confirmed estimated payments already made.

Annual Payment Target: $14,000Withholding / Credits: $5,000Payments Made / Installments Left: $3,000 / 2

Remaining target: $6,000; equal planning amount: $3,000 per remaining installment

Expected withholding/credits plus confirmed estimated payments exceed the entered annual target.

Annual Payment Target: $8,000Withholding / Credits: $6,500Payments Made: $2,000

Remaining target: $0; amount already above target: $500

The last planned installment must carry the entire remaining annual target in this simple allocation.

Annual Payment Target: $10,000Amounts Already Covering Target: $7,250Remaining Installments: 1

Equal planning amount: $2,750 for the remaining installment

FAQ

No. Determine the current annual payment target with Form 1040-ES, Publication 505, current tax software, or a qualified professional, then enter it here.

Dates can shift for weekends or legal holidays, fiscal-year taxpayers use different timing, and special rules apply in some situations. Check the current Form 1040-ES for the exact target year before paying.

Uneven income, late changes, amended estimates, earlier underpayments, annualized-income calculations, credited-payment errors, and state obligations can require separate period-by-period analysis. Equal division is only a planning aid.

About Quarterly Tax Calculator

Use the current Form 1040-ES worksheet or a current qualified computation to determine the annual federal payment target first. This page only subtracts expected withholding, applicable credits, and confirmed payments already made, then divides the remainder across 1–4 installments selected for planning. It does not calculate liability, safe-harbor status, due-date compliance, or penalties.
