Workflow

  1. Build the essential-load and starting-event inventory

    Review and record

    Decide which loads are essential during an outage, which can be delayed and which must not overlap. Obtain actual running watts/VA, startup demand and duration from equipment records or the manufacturer. Define events that can start together, including automatic restarts after an outage, and distinguish total starting demand from additional starting watts.

  2. Review fuel, siting and the actual generator rating

    Review and record

    Have the provider assess the exact generator model, fuel supply, altitude/temperature derating, ventilation/exhaust, clearances, noise and local siting requirements. Compare documented continuous and temporary W/VA ratings and allowed event duration with the essential-load cases. Confirm motor-start response and per-leg limits with the manufacturer.

  3. Specify the transfer topology and both current paths

    Review and record

    Have the designer prepare the normal-source and generator one-line arrangement, intended backed-up loads and load-management behavior. Determine the required normal and emergency path ratings independently, then screen actual switch configurations. Review service-equipment listing, neutral switching/bonding, source compatibility and short-circuit ratings with the exact protective devices.

  4. Coordinate feeders, raceway and the complete scope

    Review and record

    Have the qualified designer specify source conductors, protective devices, transfer connections, grounding/bonding and required enclosures. Compare actual feeder candidates and ordinary conduit fill, then review complete written costs including fuel work, pad/site work, permits, utility coordination, controls and testing.

  5. Install and witness the required functional checks

    Review and record

    Have qualified installers complete the electrical, fuel and mechanical work to the approved design and exact manuals. Retain inspection results and commissioning records. Have the provider verify transfer/retransfer behavior, managed-load sequencing, representative starting events and the required protective functions under its test procedure.

  6. Maintain an outage-ready operating record

    Review and record

    Keep the approved load sequence, equipment manuals, fuel arrangements, service contacts and test records accessible. Follow the model’s maintenance and exercise instructions, and review the load plan when equipment changes. Confirm the household’s CO alarms and portable-equipment precautions where relevant, then export the updated backup-power record.

Safety Notes

  • Generator, transfer-switch and fuel installations need qualified professionals and the required approvals. Never backfeed through a receptacle.
  • If CO poisoning is suspected, move to fresh air immediately and call emergency services. Follow the equipment and alarm instructions.
